故事发生在1937－1945中国抗日战争期间。除夕夜，汉奸恶霸地主黄世仁上门逼债，打死佃农杨白劳，抢走其女喜儿当奴婢。喜儿不甘受辱逃进深山，在与狂风暴雨、毒蛇猛兽的搏斗中求取生存，被折磨得满头黑发变成白发。最终，在八路军的解救下，喜儿获得了新生。

上海芭蕾舞团成立于1979年，前身为大型芭蕾舞剧《白毛女》剧组。《白毛女》作为尝试芭蕾民族化的重要作品之一，为上海芭蕾舞团的建立奠定了基础，同时也确立了上海芭蕾舞团国内一流的地位。《白毛女》曾荣获中华民族二十世纪舞蹈经典评比展演经典奖并久演不衰，至今已上演2000余场。
历经四十年，上海芭蕾舞团从《白毛女》起步，到如今拥有了《天鹅湖》《罗密欧与朱丽叶》《睡美人》《茶花女》《葛蓓莉娅》《仙女》《胡桃夹子》《吉赛尔》《堂·吉诃德》等世界经典芭蕾舞剧，《白毛女》《闪闪的红星》《梁山伯与祝英台》《花样年华》《马可·波罗》《简·爱》《长恨歌》《哈姆雷特》、上海大剧院版《胡桃夹子》等原创舞剧以及《清风舞影——巴兰钦芭蕾舞蹈诗》《欢乐颂——芭蕾精品晚会》以及《舞之魅——现代芭蕾精品》等保留剧目，形成了上海芭蕾舞团优雅细腻、博采众长的“海派艺术风格”。
《白毛女》的辉煌造就了石钟琴、茅惠芳、凌桂明等芭蕾表演艺术家，《白毛女》的传承与早期原创剧目使辛丽丽、汪齐风、杨新华等中国芭蕾的时代人物脱颖而出。如今，风格迥异的剧目磨练并打造了陈真荣、季萍萍、范晓枫、吴虎生、戚冰雪等一批批卓越的芭蕾力量。四十年来，青年演员们先后在国际芭蕾舞大赛中荣获了52枚奖牌，实现了中国芭蕾在国际芭蕾舞赛坛上零的突破——第一块奖牌、第一个双人舞大奖、第一个芭蕾“奥林匹克”金奖都出自于上海芭蕾舞团。
上海芭蕾舞团以海纳百川的胸怀和气魄，与海内外艺术团体和艺术家建立了广泛的友好合作关系。除了在全国各地演出外，上海芭蕾舞团还先后在美国、英国、加拿大、法国、西班牙、荷兰、挪威、澳大利亚、新西兰、日本、朝鲜、印度尼西亚、新加坡、泰国、芬兰、波兰、韩国等国家和中国香港、中国台湾、中国澳门等地区近百个城市演出，向世界展示中国芭蕾独特的魅力，被西方媒体称为“来自于中国上海的芭蕾像中国的瓷器（China）一样精美”。

Shanghai Ballet was formally renamed in 1979 at the base of The White-haired Girl performing team. Shanghai Ballet is one of the world’s predominant ballet companies, bringing the unique glamour of Chinese dance to the international stage. The White-Haired Girl, an award-winning classical Chinese ballet created in the 20th century, brought instant fame to the Company and helped establish its leading position in the ballet world.
During its 40-year history, Shanghai Ballet has created and staged many new ballet productions, including The Butterfly Lovers (XIN Lili), A Sigh of Love (Bertrand d’At), The Last Mission of Marco Polo (Jose Martinez) , Jane Eyre(Patrick de BANA), Echoes of Eternity (Patrick de BANA), Bright Red Star(ZHAO Ming), Hamlet (Derek Deane), Shanghai Grand Theatre’s version The Nutcracker (Derek Deane), Shanghai Ballet Version The Sleeping Beauty(Derek Deane), and the Lady of the Camellias (Derek Deane). Besides, the repertoire of the company includes Swan Lake (Derek Deane), Romeo and Juliet (Derek Deane), Coppelia (Pierre Lacotte), La Sylphide (Jean-Paul Gravier), The Nutcracker (Tetsutaro Shimizu), Giselle, Don Quixote, Balanchine and Beyond, The Ode of Joy—Gala Performance.
Such artists as SHI Zhongqin, MAO Huifang, LING Guiming etc. came out with the glory of The White-haired Girl while XIN Lili, WANG Qifeng and YANG Xinhua, etc stood out with the inheritance of The White-haired Girl and creations. Nowadays, new generations as CHEN Zhenrong, JI Pingping, FAN Xiaofeng, WU Husheng, QI Bingxue, etc. shine with the new repertories and creations. Since its founding, young dancers of the company have won a total of 52 medals in various international dance competitions, and they have also achieved impressive results in nationwide competitions.
Shanghai Ballet is active in cooperation and artistic exchange with artists and companies both at home and abroad. The company has toured not only in China but also throughout the world, including performances in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Spain, Norway, Finland, Poland, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and important cities like Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan etc.
